Project One: Saugus Middle/High School

Just ahead of the 2020 Pandemic, Bluebird was selected as the successful bidder to work with architects HMFH and Suffolk Construction on the Saugus Schools Project.

As it turns out, with our status as essential workers, Saugus was the project that would keep us going through the first few months of the pandemic. For that we are grateful.

Over the past year of working at Saugus, we learned that, if the Saugus schools are about anything, they are about scale. Everything is supersized. The work included an extensive signage and graphics package that featured monumental sets of dimensional letters and multi-story wall graphics. There is a massive set of "SAUGUS" letters to declare your arrival and a pair of 15 ft totems marking the entrances. On the roof — Five-foot tall letters rim the parapet overlooking Historic Route 1. And in the main building and field house, six murals showcase the history of Saugus as they stretch up the atrium walls. (More photos here)

Extra large elements require careful coordination and attention to detail. What sets Bluebird apart is our desire to face these challenges head on. Rather than pull back or cut corners, we let the projects stretch us so we can learn from them. Our formula hasn't changed. It is the same as it was with our next featured project — The KSQ Sculpture.

The entry to the school is marked by a landmark sign of large letters that we fabricated entirely in-house.
