During the Summer of 2021, Bluebird had the privilege of collaborating with Roto to create sections of the newly rebuilt Legacy Museum for Bryan Stevenson's Equal Justice Initiative (EJI). It was a tremendous honor to be a part of such a significant project that sheds light on America's legacy with slavery in a stunning and thought-provoking manner.

In March of 2023, I took the opportunity to visit the museum to see our work within the context of the fully installed exhibit, and I was simultaneously overcome with emotions of pride, sadness, and humility.

Our work appeared in two sections. The first, “Slavery Evolved”, lays out our country's complex history with slavery and tells the story from arriving on slave ships to the present day.

A bit further into the exhibit, one can see more of our work, reproductions of Segregation Signs from the Jim Crow era. These signs reminded me of a story my mother tells of when she and my father were newlyweds traveling through the South, and my father decided to use a Whites Only bathroom. Though this ended up being uneventful and happened a long time ago, my mother still recollects the terror she felt in that moment, even as she understood the need to be defiant in support of the Civil Rights Movement.

Across from our work was an exhibit that told the story of the legalization of interracial Marriage. I found it shocking to see that interracial marriage in Alabama was only made legal in 2000 (Yes! 2000) and by a slim margin. This fact reminded me that the hands of time move slowly and that our journey toward a more equitable society is far from over.

As one of the few Black-owned companies involved in building the museum, Bluebird's participation is an accomplishment that we are incredibly proud of. It has been our most meaningful undertaking to date, and we are hopeful that our efforts will help to shape a more equitable society in the future. If you ever have the opportunity, I fully encourage you to visit.

We extend our sincerest gratitude to The Equal Justice Initiative and Roto for the opportunity to be a part of this life-changing experience.
